6/30/2025

DAEJEON, South Korea - In a remarkable demonstration of international service and cultural solidarity, the Rotary Club of New Manila East (RCNME), led by President Karlo Benjamin Nisce and First Lady Diane Nisce, embarked on a goodwill mission to South Korea earlier this month. Spearheaded by RCNME International Service Director Mike Dela Cruz, the visit combined humanitarian action, fellowship, and diplomatic engagements, leaving an enduring mark in Daejeon and beyond.

The RCNME delegation also included Immediate Past President Marlon Mañaol and spouse Michelle Marie Mañaol, incoming Club President for Rotary Year 2025-2026 Majumi Borlaza, Club Secretary Jan Cabugawan, and Past President John Paul Montero, each representing the club’s continuing leadership and commitment to global service.

A Gift of Life: Liver Ultrasound Donation at Daejeon University Oriental Medicine Hospital

The highlight of the mission was the formal dedication ceremony at Daejeon University Oriental Medicine Hospital, where RCNME officially turned over an advanced liver ultrasound machine made possible through a USD 42,000 Rotary Global Grant. A commemorative marker, proudly displayed at the hospital entrance, stands as a symbol of the enduring friendship between the Philippines and South Korea, and of Rotary’s unwavering commitment to advancing healthcare.

The life-saving equipment is expected to significantly enhance the hospital’s capabilities in liver diagnostics, directly supporting Rotary’s mission to promote disease prevention and treatment across communities.

Deepening Rotary Bonds: Connection with District 3680

The RCNME delegation also paid an official visit to the Rotary District 3680 Office, where they met with incoming Governor Yong Geun Kim. They also celebrated the accomplishments of outgoing Governor Choi Dong Woo, who was in Calgary, Canada, attending the Rotary International Convention. The meeting reaffirmed the long-term partnership between RCNME and District 3680.

Sisterhood in Service: Induction of the Rotary Club of Daejeon Jung do as Sister Club

The mission culminated in a momentous fellowship with the Rotary Club of Daejeon Jung do, led by President Lee Geon Myoung. During a formal induction ceremony, the two clubs solidified their sister-club relationship, built on shared values of service, peace, and international understanding.

Outgoing President Kim Hyuntaek and President Lee Geon Myoung were each presented with RCNME’s 40th Anniversary Coffee Table Book and the Ruby Year Commemorative Calendar, showcasing the Filipino club’s rich history and its milestone year.

The fellowship continued over traditional Korean fare, as Rotarians from both nations bonded over kimchi, samgyupsal, and celebratory soju, a true celebration of intercultural friendship.

Service Beyond Borders: Global Health, Global Bonds

Through this mission, marked by the ultrasound donation, sister-club induction, and engagement with District 3680 leadership, RCNME exemplified Rotary International’s core principle of “Service Above Self.” Beyond providing medical technology that will benefit countless patients, the visit fostered relationships that will support future initiatives in healthcare, education, sanitation, and community development.

Looking Ahead

As the RCNME delegation concluded their visit, President Karlo Benjamin Nisce reflected on the significance of the journey:

“This is how Rotary transcends borders, through meaningful collaboration and cheerful fellowship. Our partnership with Daejeon Jung do and District 3680 shows what we can achieve when we serve together.”

Rotary’s global network thrives on these connections, where acts of service are complemented by respect for culture, and where partnerships become catalysts for lasting change. With every ultrasound scan performed and every story shared across continents, RCNME’s mission shows the club’s enduring impact on both people and communities.
